Every ship the Navy could send is already enforcing the blockade on Iran, and opening a second corridor by force would mean stripping hulls from the Pacific or Europe, where commanders have already warned the war is unsustainable.
The assessment from a former U.S. ambassador and deputy assistant secretary of state is that the Houthis can take control of the strait and the United States lacks the capacity to prevent it:
"The idea that they could force open or conduct a full blockade somewhere else starts to pull forces away from other theatres.
What the military is in the business of is providing the president options.
And the more of its capabilities it uses, the fewer options it can present."
The fallback is Saudi Arabia and its new pact partners.
