VP Vance went around the Pentagon to hear what commanders really thought about Iran
According to the NYT, JD Vance contacted senior U.S. commanders directly during the spring and summer, before their assessments of the Iran war were filtered through the Pentagon.
What he heard was grim: critical U.S. munitions were being burned through, one theater reportedly had fewer than 100 Patriot interceptors left, and commanders feared the war was weakening America’s ability to deter China, Russia and North Korea.
They also warned that Iran was proving far harder to break than expected.
Vance opposed the war from the beginning. By summer, he had battlefield assessments giving him ammunition for the argument inside the White House.
