BRICS overtaking G7 in economic might – Putin

The BRICS states are overtaking the G7 in terms of share in global GDP in PPP terms, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday while addressing the Federal Assembly.

The share of BRICS will increase to 36.6% by 2028, while that of the G7 will decrease to 27.8%, according to estimates provided by the president.

“But ten years ago, the situation was different,” Putin said, noting that in 2022 the BRICS countries surpassed the G7 in terms of GDP in PPP terms (31.5% versus 30.3%), whereas back in 1992 the BRICS share was only around 16.5%.

PPP is a metric popular with many economists that compares economic productivity and standards of living between countries by adjusting for the differences in the cost of goods and services.

The BRICS group of emerging economies, which previously comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, underwent a major expansion after Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates joined in January of this year. Saudi Arabia has also been invited and is set to become a member. Numerous other states have expressed interest in joining, while some have already formally submitted applications.

According to data from the IMF, the share of the G7 (comprising Canada, France, Japan, Italy, the US, UK, and EU) in global GDP in terms of PPP has been on a steady decline over the past several years, dropping from 50.42% in 1982 to 30.39% in 2022. The Washington-based institution expects the figure to edge lower to 29.44% this year.

Navalny-Assange: Cui bono? Untimely and Convenient Premature “Deaths and Dying!”

 29.02.2024 Author: Henry Kamens

Navalny-Assange: Cui bono? Untimely and Convenient Premature “Deaths and Dying!”

I find it hilarious that the same western media that ignored Gonzalo Lira’s death from torture and ill-care by the Ukrainians are now screaming foul about Alexei Navalny … and only too conveniently! Well, the western is having a field day over the so-called Russian opposition leader, and they want to present a foregone conclusion as to whom guilty, without any evidence.

The allegations and finger pointing comes at an opportune time for the collective West, avoiding any real discussion of the collapse of the Ukrainian media is now talking defense in Avdeevka, and that a massive defeat for Ukraine (and their masters in the west) across all fronts is on the horizon, NOT only of Ukrainian forces but also of US foreign policy. The matter is further complicated by the drying up of continued US-funding and shipments of hand-me-down weapons, with few exceptions,

The glaring hypocrisy of most Western nations, especially their ostentatious display of outrage following the death of Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, is mind-boggling. While they remain silent on the torturous slow death of Julian Assange, an Australian citizen held in a UK prison for the “crime” of exposing US war crimes, and largely overlook the tragic death of Gonzalo Lira in Ukraine, these actors elevate themselves onto the moral high ground to denounce Russia at every opportunity, and without any foundation.

Why the Double Standards?

If killing opponents is a growing BIG business, as many claims, then, if and (most likely) when Julian Assange is extradited to the US, the US government will most likely murder him and call it “suicide,” as was the case with Jeffrey Epstein.  We know how the criminals in the US government and political parties, especially the DNC, operate.

They’ll wait until the public is distracted by something else, then they’ll kill the person that is no longer needed. And Assange knows that too, as many others do in the sphere of human rights. That is why Assange is fighting for his life to avoid extradition.

Free Julian Assange

I need to find my Free Julian Assange t-shirt and wear it out places. Julian’s “crime” is that he published classified documents, internal messages, reports and videos from the U.S. government and U.S. military in 2010, which were provided by U.S. army whistleblower Chelsea Manning.

The documents and video showed how the US military was not only covering up cases of torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison, but that the wholesale murder of civilians was not only being covered up, but even encouraged.

A particularly harrowing video was the one which showed the gunsight view of an AH-64 Apache gunship crew joking as they murdered numerous unarmed civilians as if it was nothing more than a game.

As for Assange, it is as if he is a dead man walking. It is worth taking note of what Eduard Snowden shared on his social media page: the outrageous part of the UK’s years-long “trial” is to condemn Julian Assange to die in an American dungeon is that the victim of his “crime” (journalism)  is a state rather than person—the definition of apolitical offense, which the US-UK extradition treaty explicitly forbids.

The UK will likely hand him over to it strategic partner, and with the request not to torture or kill him, and of course, and he will pay for everything he has exposed. I am asking really myself who really gave this man all the leaked information?! For me, it has to be some within the US government, almost certainly higher ups, and he was an idiot to spread it… and now he finds that his shelf life has expired.

Now to compare, Assange was exposing war crimes by the US and its allies, whereas Navalny was caught on film asking an MI6 agent for millions to finance a revolution against Putin.

Navalny is seen telling an MI6 officer of the British Counterintelligence Service, James William Thomas Ford, that he needed between $10 and 20 million dollars per year to make stuff happen.

Apparently, Navalny was a real racist and white supremacist too. Now he is a darling of the West. So who really benefits from this, and so much so that they could have hoped for it?

As one recent post spread about the internet makes the candid point, aside from the lossof any life: One white man died in a Russian prison, whereas weeping liberals of the world [turn a blind eye] to 30,000 Palestinians killed in a televised genocide.

I think the western hypocrisy over Navalny dying in prison is a good topic for discussion, as it is about deflections and not about the possible causes of his death. Based on the rush to judgement by western leaders, which is a foregone conclusion. The West hopes that Navalny’s death will somehow lead to an uprising. If Russia cannot be defeated on the battlefield, then they will need to try to undermine it from the inside – so goes the logic.

As Caitlin Johnstone writes:

“I really could not have a lower opinion of people who would rather talk about Navalny’s persecution in a far away country that has nothing to do with them than Julian Assange being persecuted at the hands of their own government. It’s the most pathetic, bootlicking behavior imaginable.”

It does not stop there; they killed Epstein, so the knowledge in his brain couldn’t be tapped by opponents. And it seems they have been quick to pass judgment, and it was not a production act?  And did not Navalny have 5 doses of Pfizer Covid Vaxx while in prison?

There are many ways to kill our opponents –especially for the non-productive and ageing population, under the guise of “this is good for you”.  Let’s not forget the T-4 program in prewar Germany, also known as Action T4, which was a Nazi German euthanasia program that targeted individuals with physical and mental disabilities, as well as those deemed unworthy of life or procreation.

Russian authorities have accused Ukraine, following the fall of Avdiivka, of war crimes. Allegations suggest that Ukraine maintained “secret torture and burial sites in the city,” according to preliminary reports:

“We do not rule out the possibility that we will receive data on secret prisons, secret burials, and the consequences of torture, about which we have preliminary information. Therefore, this work will be launched now,” Rodion Miroshnik said.

Miroshnik, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Special Envoy, further claimed that residents of Avdiivka purportedly faced torture and death at the hands of the Ukrainian Army due to their suspected pro-Russia position.

Who else has died under convenient circumstances?

Biden is now threatening to retaliate over Navalny’s death. At the same time, the US wants to extradite Julian Assange to the US so they can kill him. However, Biden threatened ‘consequences’ over Navalny, but he has few options. It is worth noting that the sanctions already imposed on Russia over Ukraine have not deterred the Kremlin. And actually have made Russia stronger and more financially secure!

Will unconventional approaches work?

This has Biden and his team at a loss. “We’re contemplating what else could be done: We’re looking at a whole number of options,” claims Biden.  The US leadership and its allies are now faced with “the dilemma of what they could possibly do that would make any difference to the Kremlin?”

More weapons and money to Ukraine, well, that is not working as planned, especially as Ukraine is running out of men to mobilize, not to mention the morale of the army seems to be collapsing. Furthermore, it is doubtful if the US House of Representatives will even agree to that before the US government starts shutting down in a few weeks, if additional money is not passed to keep the lights on in Washington.

Thus, any additional money and weapons designated for Ukraine will be a day late and a dollar short. In addition, the Ukrainian retreat was so precipitous, that large amounts of desperately needed ammunition were left behind, along with large numbers of western supplied armored vehicles and weapons. It was hard enough for the west to supply these the first time, and now the larder is bare.

The recriminations against Russia are rather hypocritical, little doubt about that!

Of course, it is. But surprising? Not really! … of course, same fake business like with the Skripals 2018 “Novichok” and Syria “gas attacks”, we are seeing just another attempt to emotionally blackmail the US president into retaliating against Russia.

We can see the situation is akin to “cutting off your nose to spite your face.” I know that no sooner had Navalny died, then they started to blame it on Putin, and they did immediately as if they had expected, it even before it happened…. After the interview with Tucker Carlson, why should Putin want to ruin his “improved image?”

Cui bono?

Washington DC: War Capital of the World

by

Holy Moly!

Just imagine if Washington discovered Russia or China had placed 12 spy stations on the Texas border. The beltway pols already foaming at the mouth about the alleged hordes of Nigerians, Albanians, Chinamen and commie agents of Cuba and Daniel Ortega already bursting through America’s borders would be splitting a gut or even suffering serial cardiac arrest.

And that’s to say nothing of triggering a potential nuclear showdown of the type narrowly avoided when Khrushchev backed down to President Kennedy’s insistence in October 1962 that Soviet missiles be removed from Cuba. Mankind narrowly escaped incineration on that occasion, but at least a profound rule of engagement for the nuclear age was established by that narrow miss.

To wit, you don’t put threatening weapons and forces on the doorstep of your nuclear rival. It’s verboten by the raw requirements of human survival and common sense.

That’s why the often forgotten part of the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred, as well. As it transpired, JFK agreed to remove 15 Jupiter missiles fitted with nuclear warheads from Turkey in return for the dismantlement of the Soviet missiles in Cuba, albeit that part of the deal was never publicly acknowledged by Washington.

Moreover, since there was every reason to take the Soviet threat seriously in those times, there wasn’t much Washington-inspired or funded meddling in Czechoslovakia during what turned out to be the failed spring uprising of 1968. Even though the Soviets had invaded Prague with 500,000 Warsaw Pact troops and brutally massacred hundreds of protesters, LBJ had actually planned to proceed with a planned summit with Soviet leader Brezhnev – until he cancelled at the last minute on purely political perception grounds.

Even when the Solidarity Movement in Poland gained huge momentum a decade later, the CIA and other arms of the Warfare State held their fire. Most of the smidgen of aid for the Polish freedom movement came from the Pope and the AFL-CIO.

So the rules of nuclear engagement were adhered to – notwithstanding the terrible tyranny of the Soviet Empire. Yet by the 1980s the west had won the cold war without directly firing a shot in the direction of Moscow or its eastern European vassals. That’s because the Soviet Empire was rotting from within owing to the inherent faults of socialism.

In turn, the self-inflicted demise of the Soviet Union provided the context for a sweeping contraction of the US Warfare State and its global tentacles of intervention, subversion, invasion and occupation. By 1991 when the Soviet Union disappeared into the dustbin of history, in fact, there was just plain no serious threat to America’s homeland security left anywhere on the entire planet.

So the agenda for the putative “Exceptional Nation” should have been leadership of a worldwide campaign for the abolition of nuclear weapons and general disarmament; liquidation of cold war institutions like NATO, SEATO, the Warsaw Pact etc; and defunding of the entire cold war apparatus of propaganda and subversion represented by the likes of Radio Free Europe, the covert action capabilities of the CIA and the interventionist operations of the State Department and Agency for International Development, among others.

In a word, the objective conditions of the early 1990s presented a world-historical opportunity for Washington to become the Peace Capital of the planet. But that was  not to be because during the Reagan Administration a mushrooming clique of neocon war-mongers had grabbed control of national security policy, thereby providing the rationale and political cover for the military-industrial complex to continue extracting huge gobs of fiscal resources.

By the end of the 1980s, therefore, they had already driven a massive, utterly unnecessary increase in defense spending. The last Carter budget had been about $134 billion, but by 1990 the Reagan/Bush administrations had pushed defense spending to upwards of $300 billion. Worse still, inside this huge eruption of the DOD topline there had been funded a sweeping expansion of conventional warfare capacity. That is, the naval, air and land assets needed to undertake wars of intervention and occupation all around the world – ventures that had not been prudent or practical during the Cold War and capabilities which were irrelevant to the Soviet nuclear threat, in any event.

Furthermore, in support of that rejuvenated conventional military intervention capacity there had occurred large increases in the covert operations capabilities of the CIA under the leadership of the truly evil William Casey, as well as expansion of ideological warfare tools at the newly minted National Endowment for Democracy and similar increases in funding for Washington’s broadcasting and propaganda arms.

In all, the national security budget – including international operations and Veterans expense – had stood at $600 billion in today’s dollars (2023 $) in 1990 and could have easily been cut to $300 billion by the mid-1990s under the auspice of a Washington led World Peace campaign.

Alas, nothing such was to be. President Bill Clinton and his fellow graduates of the 1960s anti-Vietnam War protests betrayed the peace movement of their generation when they stumbled into power on the back of war-hawk and CIA operative George H. W. Bush’s gaffes. So instead of slashing the defense budget they maintained nominal dollar levels of spending and instead of dismantling NATO they triggered a relentless expansion toward Russia’s door step in violation of Washington’s solemn promises not to do so at the time of the German reunification.

Accordingly, there was no peace dividend and, more importantly, no dismantling of the Warfare State on the banks of the Potomac. By the last Clinton budget most of the former Warsaw Pact was already in NATO or pending membership, and the total national security budget including international operations and veterans still stood at $602 billion in today’s dollars.

It was off to the races from there, of course. Washington’s misbegotten war on terrorism and serial interventions in the middle east took the constant dollar national security budget to $1.09 trillion by the end of the Bush Administration – a level to which the “peace” candidate of 2008 managed to subtract less than $100 billion by the end of his term.

Likewise, Trump’s campaign pledge to end the Forever Wars was quickly set aside as all the Forever Wars he inherited were continued largely unabated and the NATO status quo changed only by dint of various members pretending to spend a hairline fraction more of their GDP on defense. Even then, the Donald sent the constant dollar national security budget spiraling higher to $1.15 trillion on this side of the pond.

To be sure, “Joe Biden” didn’t spent 50 years in Washington without the war disease fully infecting his limited mental capacities. So the Forever Wars have been escalated and the girth of the Warfare State has gained even more fantastic proportions, weighing in at $1.30 trillion in FY 2024.

And that’s the very heart of the matter. What should be a $400 to $500 billion national security budget at most now stands at three times that level. This is not only fueling crushing increases in the national debt, but, more importantly, continues to assure that what should have been the Peace Capital of the world remains the War Capital of the planet.

Needless to say, a $1.3 trillion national security state is a very bad thing, no matter which geography it happens to occupy. That’s because it inherently embodies a vast military/industrial/intelligence complex that literally depends upon a mission of Global Hegemony to justify what is otherwise an utterly hideous waste of fiscal and economic resources.

Stated differently, only a Global Hegemon needs a $1.3 trillion national security budget. There is no other rationale that would plausibly justify a number even remotely that large.

The objective truth is that there is no power on planet earth than can surmount the great Atlantic and Pacific moats with a massive land, air and sea armada and thereby threaten America’s homeland security militarily. And as for nuclear weapons, keeping the nation’s 3,750 nuclear warheads on deployed status in the nuclear triad or in useable standby form costs about $65 billion per year – a figure that could be raised to $100 billion to upgrade existing delivery systems and thereby remove all doubt.

Beyond that, several hundred billion more to defend the American shorelines and airspace would more than adequately handle the putative threat of Russia, which has only one obsolete aircraft carrier that has been in drydock for repairs for the last several years. And the same goes for China which now has three aircraft carriers, including two ancient rust buckets purchased from the rump of the Soviet Union years ago, and which would collapse instantly in any case if its $3.5 trillion global export market were to be cut-off by war against the USA or Europe.

In short, well more than $500 billion of excess fiscal resources flow into the Warfare State on an annual basis. This provides the fiscal gist for self-perpetuation of this monstrous complex and the financial incentive for a vast lobbying operation by military contractors, beltway consultants, national security think tanks, do-gooder NGOs and an endless phalanx of Deep State agencies and bureaus – all designed to justify what objectively is a hideous waste.

The recent revelations that the CIA has been actively running bases, training programs and intelligence gathering operations on Russia’s very doorstep for the last 10 years tells you why Washington is well and truly the War Capital of the world.

The fact is, Russia isn’t now and wasn’t in 2014 a military threat to the American homeland. For crying out loud, America’s $27 GDP dwarfs Russia’s $2 trillion. It couldn’t remotely field an invasionary armada, which would take $50 trillion of GDP or 25X more, and would never prevail in a nuclear arms race, either.

So why did Washington decide to help overthrow Ukraine’s dully elected government during the Maidan Coup of 2014 and then launch in complete violation of the lessons of 1962 an extensive CIA operation on its border, as revealed this week by the New York Times?

Simple. An institution thriving on $500 billion of pointless funding surely knows its own vulnerability and fears the day when the sleepwalking American electorate chances to awaken from its slumber. So it needs inflated threats, conjured enemies and provoked confrontations.

Fortunately, however, there is a solution to what amounts to the self-licking icecream cone embodied in the nation’s massive Warfare State. To wit, bring the Empire Home and put a strong, informed and courageous statesman in the White House who can put the War Capital of the world out of business before it is too late.

Needless to say, that is not remotely Biden or Trump. The only way forward is with RFK.*

Watching the watchdogs: Biden, US media and Arab-American political power

US media attacks on the Arab and Muslim American communities have only motivated them further to flex political muscle.

Arab- and Muslim-Americans and some 60 percent of all Americans have wanted for months for US President Joe Biden to pressure Israel into accepting an immediate ceasefire in the war on Gaza. The White House has all but ignored them.

So Arab- and Muslim-Americans decided to flex their political muscle by using their electoral power in critical swing states in this year’s presidential election. In December, community leaders from nine potential swing states met in Dearborn, Michigan under the slogan “Abandon Biden, ceasefire now”. They vowed not to vote for Biden in the November presidential polls unless he changes his policies that enable Israel’s genocidal attacks on Gaza, rob Palestinians of decent life conditions, and largely ignore the views of significant minority communities in the United States.

The campaign quickly attracted support in Michigan and other states with large Arab-American communities, along with criticism from Biden supporters who feared that the campaign to pressure the president might inadvertently guarantee a Donald Trump victory.

Arab- and Muslim-Americans intensified their campaign in February, when demeaning articles in the mainstream press helped mobilised even more community members.

On February 2, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published an op-ed by Steven Stalinsky, titled Welcome to Dearborn, America’s Jihad Capital, which alleged “Imams and politicians in the Michigan city side with Hamas against Israel and Iran against the US.” The article tarred the entire community as dangerous extremists.

On the same day, a New York Times op-ed by Thomas Friedman metaphorically compared Middle Eastern countries and political actors to animals in the jungle, including trap-door spiders and wasps.

Whatever these – and other offensive articles and cartoons – aimed to achieve, they inadvertently propelled Arab-American engagements in high-stakes electoral politics. The city of Dearborn, Michigan, singled out by name and smeared in the WSJ article, became ground zero for this effort.

The Michigan community reached out to mobilise nationally with other marginalised communities that the White House has often ignored – notably African-Americans, Hispanics, progressive Jews, labourers, women, university students, and others. They joined hands because they share concerns about foreign policy as well as the White House’s domestic priorities and its opportunistic and self-serving citizen engagement.

The activists demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the implementation of existing legal restrictions on the unconditional aid and arms the US has provided Israel for decades. They are fed up with being ignored by a White House that takes their votes for granted, as well as by the Democratic Party they have helped boost through voter-registration drives since the mid-1980s. They are also incredibly frustrated with mainstream, often racist, media that misrepresent, demean, and ignore them.

I asked Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud this week why his town joins hands with other disgruntled American communities to impact national politics and foreign policy at the highest level. He said: “This is all about trust and respect between officials and citizens. We must end the discrepancy we see today between elected officials and the values of citizens. There are no possible justifications or qualifiers for genocide or killing babies and civilians on such a large scale. None at all.”

Privacy Policy

In our conversation and his public statements, Hammoud spelled out how US foreign policy and media coverage directly impact ordinary citizens.

“It’s personal for us, as some of our families have experienced Israeli occupation or wars, or volunteered in refugee camps,” he said. “When foreign policy decisions directly impact the wellbeing of Dearborn residents, it is irresponsible to walk away from difficult policy conversations that can lead to saving the lives of innocent men, women, and children.”

Hammoud was clear on his community’s demands: “We want action, not words”.

But so far, Arab- and Muslim-Americans have received mostly words. Worried about the “Abandon Biden” campaign, the president’s campaign staff approached local leaders to meet, but they refused. They insisted they wanted to talk with policymakers at the White House. And it worked.

Biden quickly sent to Michigan several of his staffers, including Jon Finer, principal deputy national security adviser; Tom Perez, senior adviser to the president and director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs; and Samantha Power, head of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

But after the meetings, nothing changed yet again. The Arab- and Muslim-American community received more nice words, and no action.

So as Biden maintained the flow of arms and money for Israel’s assault on Gaza, community leaders, including US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, decided to raise the stakes. They launched the “Listen to Michigan” campaign that asks “people of conscience” to list themselves as “uncommitted” in the presidential primary on Tuesday, February 27. This signals to Biden and the party that they must listen to citizens’ concerns, and earn their votes, or else risk losing in state and presidential elections.

The community leaders and activists dare to do this because they enjoy unprecedented leverage from the size and distribution of Arab- and Muslim-American voters in swing states like Michigan, where elections are tightly contested. Michigan is home to more than 300,000 Arab-Americans. Trump won the state by less than 11,000 votes in 2016, and Biden in 2020 by 154,000 votes, including many cast by Arab-Americans. Biden also won by 10,500 votes in Arizona, which is home to 60,000 Arab Americans, and by 11,800 votes in Georgia, where 57,000 Arab-Americans live.

Veteran Arab-American activist James Zogby, co-founder and president of the Arab American Institute, told me that this burst of action builds on 40 years of community capacity-building across the country. It captures Arab-Americans’ mindset that “is moving from paralysis and despair in the early 1980s to today’s feeling that we can control our destiny.”

The other partners in the informal coalition to change US policy add clout. Michigan’s large United Autoworkers Union has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, recalling how it had also opposed apartheid in South Africa. The African Methodist Episcopal Church has also demanded an immediate ceasefire and called the attacks on Gaza “mass genocide”.

Progressive groups, such as US Senator Bernie Sanders’s Our Revolution, have also joined the “Listen to Michigan” campaign.

Mayor Hammoud told me that coalitions of minority communities have always worked together on shared causes at the local level. But, he added, “I’ve never seen a paradigm shift on the Palestine issue like we see today, with up to 80 percent of Democrats and 50 percent of youth supporting the ceasefire we call for.”

One Arab-American who advised the White House in recent years also told me the newfound political leverage of the community “is unexpected, unfamiliar, and unprecedented.”

Indeed it is, and Tuesday’s Michigan primary should reveal precisely how impactful it might be – and if it can temper American war-making abroad by acknowledging its citizens at home who take seriously that their governance system is anchored in “the consent of the governed”.

Mainstream British Journalists Demand Access to Gaza

Over 50 UK-based journalists who report for mainstream outlets released a letter demanding that Israel allow more reporters into Gaza. Israel has killed over 120 Palestinian journalists and caused a communications blackout in the Strip that has stifled reporting on the scale of destruction in Gaza. Tel Aviv has allowed select members of the corporate press to take guided tours in Gaza.

The letter, signed by reporters from Sky News, the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS, was first reported in the UK media on Wednesday. “Almost five months into the war in Gaza, foreign reporters are still being denied access to the territory, outside of the rare and escorted trips with the Israeli military,” it states. “We urge the Governments of Israel and Egypt to allow free and unfettered access to Gaza for all foreign media.”

Some of the few guided trips into Gaza have resulted in embarrassment for Israel. After taking journalists to al-Shifa Hospital and a cemetery, mainstream media outlets reported that the curated evidence did not match the claims put forward by Israeli officials.

“There is intense global interest in the events in Gaza and for now the only reporting has come from journalists who were already based there.” The letter continues, “It’s vital that local journalists’ safety is respected and that their efforts are bolstered by the journalism of members of the international media.”

Overall, Israeli forces have killed over 120 Palestinian journalists. Sherif Mansour, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, said, “The Israel-Gaza war is the most dangerous situation for journalists we have ever seen, and these figures show that clearly.” He continued, “The Israeli army has killed more journalists in ten weeks than any other army or entity has in any single year.”

CPJ found that Israel was responsible for nearly 75% of all journalists’ deaths worldwide in 2023. “More than three-quarters of the 99 journalists and media workers killed worldwide in 2023 died in the Israel-Gaza war, the majority of them Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza.” The CPJ report concluded, “The conflict claimed the lives of more journalists in three months than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year.”

The letter adds, “The need for comprehensive on-the-ground reporting of the conflict is imperative.” In under five months, Israel’s military operations have decimated the Strip. Over 29,000 Palestinians are dead, including just under 12,500 children. Thousands of others are missing; many are assumed to be dead and buried under the rubble.

Additionally, the widespread destruction in Gaza, combined with the restrictions on aid, has caused a humanitarian crisis. Several infants are reported to have starved to death over the past week.
