TIME IS ON CHINA’S SIDE: WHY BEIJING NO LONGER FEARS TRUMP
Professor Wang Wen, Dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China, just delivered one of the clearest windows yet into how Chinese now see Trump. What he describes is not fear. It is quiet, growing confidence that external pressure has strengthened China rather than weakened it.
THE NEW CHINESE CONSENSUS
Trump 2.0 is viewed as the concentrated outbreak of deep contradictions inside the American system.
Transactional “America First” policies are rapidly eroding U.S. global leadership and the post-World War II order the United States itself built.
Most Chinese academics agree Trump’s moves are driven by short-term electoral and commercial interests with no long-term global governance plan.
The result, they argue, is objective acceleration of multipolarization.
THE PRESSURE THAT BACKFIRED
When Trump launched the first trade war in 2018, Chinese public opinion felt real anxiety.
By 2026 the same blockage forced independent innovation. China is rising in semiconductors, ships, new energy vehicles, photovoltaics, robotics and large-scale models.
Wang’s own widely cited article last year carried the title “Thanks to Trump for making China great again.” Extreme external pressure filled industrial gaps, expanded global cooperation and produced a qualitative leap in strategic resilience.
China is no longer merely reacting. It now proactively shapes the relationship through rare-earth controls, reciprocity lists and multi-topic dialogues.
THE REAL CONTEST
China’s goal has never been to defeat the United States. It is to improve livelihoods, achieve common prosperity and complete national rejuvenation.
The 15th Five-Year Plan focuses on domestic demand, technological innovation, urban-rural balance and ecological protection for 1.4 billion people.
The ultimate arena of competition is domestic governance capability. Policy continuity, a massive market and institutional coordination give China long-term advantages the polarized, policy-reversing American system cannot match.
Time, Wang argues, is on China’s side.
THE IRAN WAR LESSON
Chinese observers see the U.S.-Iran conflict as a tragedy that has already crossed earlier red lines.
Yet the same conflict reinforces the paper-tiger assessment: America failed to force regime change, failed to control the Strait of Hormuz, failed to manage oil prices and failed to protect Gulf allies.
Historically the United States has never conquered a country with a population above 30 million. Iran has 80 million.
If America cannot subdue Iran, the logic runs, how could it conquer China?
THE BOTTOM LINE
China is not seeking hegemony. It is focusing 99 percent of its energy on making its own body stronger while building a community with a shared future for mankind through peaceful development, common prosperity and genuine multilateralism.
External pressure did not stop China. It forced China to become more resilient, more independent and more confident than ever.
