 The U.S. government briefly cut off the world from its most advanced AI models, then sent diplomats around the globe to tell everyone there's no 'kill switch.'

When the White House blocked non-U.S. residents from Anthropic's Mythos and Fable models in June on national security grounds, Asian tech executives used the disruption to market their own alternatives.

European lawmakers used the opportunity to redouble its own calls for digital independence from America.

Rubio's cable last week instructed diplomats to push back against "digital sovereignty" initiatives and sell American AI as the ONLY serious option, describing efforts to build rival systems as a waste of time.

The problem is that Trump's habit of wielding economic coercion against allies makes that pitch nearly impossible to believe...

America built the world's most powerful AI, but also made the best argument for not depending on it.
