In Athens, Greece, with the ancient Parthenon behind him, Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke yesterday of civilization at “an inflection point.” He evoked the zero-sum binary of Western supremacy or subjection. He imagined “a distinct character which arose here and shaped the whole story of the civilization that came after it.” In racist mythology, White people wrote civilization into existence, and to defend White supremacy is to defend civilization.
