They have a phrase: "Israel has the right to defend itself."
It is deployed with perfect consistency.
It is never applied to Palestinians defending themselves against occupation.
It is never applied to the family whose house was demolished to make room for a settlement.
It is never applied to the fishing boats shot at in their own territorial waters.
It is never applied to the child at the checkpoint who did not move fast enough.
"The right to defend yourself" is, in Western political language, a franchise.
Available to some.
Inapplicable to others.
The franchise is not distributed randomly.
It is distributed along the lines of which deaths produce consequences for the people in the comfortable offices making the decisions.
Gaza revealed the franchise map to anyone who hadn't already seen it.
