Historian William Dalrymple argues that the history of the Palestinians is best understood not as a story of one population suddenly replacing another, but as one of deep continuity alongside constant cultural change. Over millennia, the people of the land experienced successive shifts in language, religion and political rule, from ancient Semitic languages to Aramaic, Greek and eventually Arabic; and from Canaanite religious traditions to Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Speaking to Palestine Deep Dive, Dalrymple draws on developments in ancient DNA research, arguing that modern Palestinians retain substantial genetic links to ancient populations of the region and challenging the notion that they are simply descendants of Arab conquerors who arrived from Arabia.
