The war machine that switched on Sunday just switched off again, and the reason is helium, urea and a diesel shortage America made itself
The CENTCOM battle staff stood up early Monday, the clearest sign yet of a coming campaign, has been taken back down.
In Larry Johnson’s view, the ramp toward major operations is on hold.
Nothing on the battlefield caused that.
The explanation was entirely economic: a dollar under strain, Treasury unable to hold yields down against every pressure pushing the other way, and a diesel shortage worsened by American refiners shipping supply abroad while farmers and truckers pay for it.
Then came the answer to everyone proposing pipelines as the way around Iran.
Liquefied gas, sulfur, urea and helium cannot travel through a pipe.
They need ships, and those ships need the strait.
By the figures, that's roughly a quarter of the world's LNG, a third of its sulfur and urea, and up to 40 percent of its helium, none of which has a land route.
Meanwhile Rubio has ordered every US embassy to deliver a formal demand that host governments cut trade with Iran or lose access to the dollar.
And in the same week, India signed a declaration condemning the strikes, and China refused to sign one calling the strait open.
The pressure campaign is being announced to a world that has already answered.
