It is that oil itself is slowly losing its ability to hold China hostage.
China is the world’s largest crude importer. Every war, blockade, sanctions regime and chokepoint crisis can hit Chinese supply chains, industry and transport.
That is a strategic vulnerability.
And Beijing knows it.
This is why China’s green transition was never about satisfying Europe’s carbon morality.
It is about energy sovereignty.
Electric vehicles. Electrified public transport. High-speed rail. Renewables. Nuclear power. Grid expansion. Domestic oil and gas production. Strategic reserves.
Put together, they all serve the same purpose:
Reduce the amount of Chinese national power that can be held hostage by somebody else’s control over oil.
The Iran war has already shown why this matters.
Iran tried to turn Hormuz into leverage over Washington by sending global oil prices higher.
China responded not by sending a carrier group, but by cutting imports, drawing on reserves, adjusting refinery output and relying increasingly on an economy that can consume less oil.
China is able to stabilize the international oil market precisely because its industrial system gave it room to absorb the shock.
But the deeper lesson is this:
the less oil China needs, the less geopolitical leverage oil producers, chokepoints, sanctions and the petrodollar system have over China.
That is why the EV transition matters far beyond cars.
It is not merely decarbonization.
It is the gradual removal of oil from China’s strategic throat.
