Jeffrey Sachs: the West is still living in an empire it no longer commands. Ten percent of the world’s population does not get to dictate to the other ninety. India, China, and the BRICS majority are not asking for permission.
“We live in a mindset in the United States of US privilege. Even Europe, 80 years after the end of the European empires, lives in a mindset of privilege. We get to tell the others what to do. That is not a multipolar world. That’s the old world of empire.
I think we are moving to a multipolar world because India is the third-largest economy in the world. China is the number-one economy. By mid-century, India will overtake the United States in size and will be the second-largest economy in the world. So the idea that the West, which has about 10 percent of the world population, can dictate to the rest is passé. But the United States doesn’t get that yet. We still have a Treasury Secretary who declares economic D-Days against the rest of the world.
I like the maturity of the BRICS and SCO saying, no, it’s not like that. Calm down. We are actually the majority of the world, and we don’t accept it that way. And that’s why I really hope India doesn’t get caught up in US games like the Quad or the US–Israel games. It’s just a big mistake for India. India is too great a country for that.”
The United States still declares economic D-Day against the world. India has a choice: the Quad or the majority. India is too great a country for the Atlanticist death spiral.
