 what a US serviceperson in the region told me: Even if more oil is coming out from the Strait, the cost of the military escorting of ships is staggering. It simply isn't sustainable.

Here's the irony: For years, there's been irritation in DC that the US pays for the security in the Persian Gulf even though it doesn't buy any of its oil. Instead, China is buying that oil and, as a result, the US has been subsidizing Chinese oil imports by shouldering the cost of security in the Persian Gulf.

Whatever cost that was, it is now dramatically higher because of the cost of escorting ships...
