The Big Conservation Lie is a 2017 book by Kenyan investigative journalist John Mbaria and carnivore ecologist Dr Mordecai Ogada that offers a critical look at the wildlife conservation industry in Kenya and across Africa.
In this interview excerpt, Dr Ogada explains to Lynn Ngugi the moment he realised the truth behind the conservation industry he was working in. While overseeing a school and water tank project near Amboseli, he was told the Maasai community had been placed behind Kitirua Hill so their villages, schools and cattle would not spoil tourists’ views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
This colonial reality, in which Indigenous communities are pushed out of sight to preserve the tourist experience, made him question the moral foundations of the conservation industry. Despite years of academic study and a career dedicated to conservation, he realised that he could no longer justify being part of a system that excluded the very people who had lived on and cared for that land for generations.
