They say: "You can't blame ordinary Americans for what their government does."
Sure.
And I won't.
But I will ask what ordinary Americans did with the freedom they had to find out.
The information was available. The history was documented. The declassified files were public. The veterans who came home and told the truth were on television.
At every point there was a choice: engage with what the country was doing in your name, or find a reason not to.
Most people find a reason not to.
That's not a crime.
But it's not innocence either.
Innocence requires genuine unavailability of the truth.
What most Americans have is something different:
The truth was available and the comfort of not knowing it was chosen.
That choice has consequences that fell on other people.
Other people who did not get to choose.
