“Trump didn’t find a Delcy Rodriguez in Iran”
Aaron David Miller () breaks down how Trump’s entire Iran war strategy was built on a dangerous pattern: every past escalation produced no blowback, convincing him he could keep pushing.
Miller recounts Trump’s mindset: Trump said to himself “I left the JCPOA… the region didn’t implode. I killed Qasem Soleimani… it didn’t (blow up and no negative consequences)." Each time Trump went against conventional wisdom and took risky actions, he perceived he was right and the nay-sayers were wrong. Unfortunately, he came to believe he would *always* be right.
Miller explains how Trump believed he could find “an Iranian Delcy Rodriguez” to topple the regime in Tehran — only to discover “there are no Delcy Rodriguezes in Tehran.”
Instead, Miller says Trump confronted a hardened Iranian leadership that gained new legitimacy inside a previously fractured domestic audience after Khamenei’s killing and is now more repressive, more entrenched, and far more resilient than Washington expected.
