Acting on Israel's interests again, the Trump admin believes the International Criminal Court (ICC) has no authority to investigate, arrest, or prosecute officials from countries that never agreed to be under the court's jurisdiction, including the United States and Israel.
Because of that, the U.S. imposed sanctions on ICC President Tomoko Akane and senior ICC lawyer Abdoulaye Seye.
This all has to do with the increasing pressure from the ICC as it relates to Israel and Gaza, including arrest warrants issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and investigations involving Israeli officials.
The sanctions are financial rather than criminal. They can freeze any assets those individuals have under U.S. jurisdiction and effectively cut them off from much of the U.S. financial system.
Akane herself has previously warned that U.S. sanctions could seriously undermine the court's ability to function
