“Freedom of the press” is a nice slogan — until a Chinese reporter asks tough questions.
The United States loves to lecture the world about free speech and free press. They call it a core value.
They use it as a weapon to criticize China and others. “You are authoritarian!” they say. “You censor!”
But when the reporter is Chinese, everything changes. Suddenly “national security” is the excuse. They want stricter visa rules for Chinese journalists and students. Questions about US wars or policies become too dangerous. A Chinese student learning new technology? Shut the door.
This is not fair. China never claimed to be a liberal democracy. America does, loudly.
That makes the double standard clear. US reporters get full access in China, but Chinese journalists face extra checks in America.
It is the same old pattern: preach openness, but practice control. When Chinese talent helps America, it is “global success.” When it helps China, it is “theft” and “spying.”
In the end, “freedom of the press” is not a real principle for Washington. It is a tool of power. Useful when it weakens others. Forgotten when it threatens US control.
The world sees this hypocrisy now. More countries are building their own systems instead of trusting one that preaches liberty but acts with control.
The empire hates inconvenient questions.
It never liked them.
