The genius of making the lower class the most fervent believers is that they are also the most available soldiers.
The person who inherits the most from the imperial arrangement, the financier, the weapons contractor, the holder of dollar-denominated assets, the one whose standard of living is most directly produced by the global dollar system, that person's children go to schools that produce lawyers and bankers.
The person who inherits the story without the material benefit, the one whose town was deindustrialized, whose union was broken, whose public school was defunded, that person's children are available for recruitment at eighteen.
They are recruited not with a lie, exactly.
With the story.
"Serve your country."
"Defend freedom."
"You will be part of something larger than yourself."
And the something larger than yourself is real.
The camaraderie is real.
The sense of purpose is real.
All of it is real, and all of it is also the mechanism by which the children of people who received the least from the arrangement are sent to maintain it in places they cannot find on a map.
For the benefit of people who will say "thank you for your service" at airports.
The story is what makes this possible.
Without the story, you would need to explain honestly what you were asking them to go and do, and why.
With the story, they go.
And they believe.
And some of them don't come back.
And their names go on a wall.
And the arrangement continues.
