The most subtle detail everyone has missed in this Trump-Xi summit in Beijing is the tectonic shift in the language Xi is using to address Taiwan. President Xi has explicitly warned Trump that "mishandling" the Taiwan issue could lead to "conflict". In previous summits such a declaration would have been unthinkable. Xi would never have dared to utter the word conflict. He would have retreated to the safe and toothless language of disruptive impact. This change is not trivial. Nothing reflects strategic confidence more than the vocabulary a world leader chooses to deploy. The handwriting on the wall is clear. Xi no longer views China as second to the United States. Beijing believes they are now an equal and they will no longer tolerate any interference regarding Taiwan. They are explicitly signaling that any further moves will trigger a direct military confrontation. We should expect the Trump administration to take this threat seriously and immediately backtrack on the $6.6 billion dollar arms deal promised to Taiwan last year.
