The people who had committed one of the largest sustained crimes in human history had to be paid to stop committing it.
And you are presenting this as evidence of Western moral achievement.
The extortionist who stops robbing you after you pay him his asking price is not demonstrating virtue.
He is demonstrating that his moral position was always conditional on the price.
The West did not end slavery because it concluded slavery was wrong.
It ended slavery when the political and economic pressure made ending it less costly than continuing it, and then it charged the bill to the public, not to the people who had profited for more than two centuries.
You have described this accurately.
You have interpreted it entirely backwards.
