Israel’s impunity is about to be smashed into a million pieces that will never be put back together. Calling the case a “blood libel” doesn’t answer the legal question before the International Court of Justice. The case brought by South Africa under the Genocide Convention is straightforward: are the obligations of the Convention being breached? Asserting self-defence is not a licence for starvation of civilians, collective punishment, or the destruction of a civilian population. The Court has already found the allegations plausible and ordered provisional measures. Now the evidence will decide. Not Israel’s rhetoric. Gifted impunity will soon be no more.
