We’ve been told, again and again, that Israel has a “right to exist.”
Just for the sake of clarity, what does this actually mean?
-Does it mean Israel has the right to kill civilians at a rate that human rights organizations have calculated exceeds 80 percent non-combatants?
-Does it mean Israel has a greater right to Palestine than the Palestinians, whose ancestors have lived there continuously and can prove it, while Israel’s ancestral claim requires you to accept a 2,000-year diaspora as a valid deed of ownership?
-Does it mean the right to exist supersedes international law, the Geneva Conventions, its own treaty obligations, and the basic rules of war that every other nation is expected to follow?
-Does it mean the right to exist includes the right to exist without criticism, without scrutiny, without accountability, and without anyone being permitted to ask these questions without being called an antisemite for asking them?
Because if the “right to exist,” means all of that, it is not a right. It is a blank check, and the American church has been co-signing it for decades.
