The last time the US intervened to reverse an oil nationalization was in Iran in 1953, when it helped overthrow Mohammad Mossadegh and put Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in power. What followed was not democracy but authoritarian rule, and ultimately a radical fundamentalist revolution.
