Talk about Gaza, all the time. Talk about the resilience of life, about the genocide, about the horror and the grief and about the incurable loss and devestation. But please, please, talk about Israel. Don't settle for "they're all monsters". Dig deep into the monstrosity. It is a human monstrosity. Demand justice. Demand accountability. Stand guard against the cheapening and degradation of your own values. Call Israel out for its crimes. Call Israelis out for their lack of humanity, the result of life-long dehumanization of others.
Don't be embarrassed to ask what your Israeli interlocutor thinks or did with regard to the genocide. Don't let them get comfortable with a discussion about "complexity". Don't get comfortable yourself by recourse to essentialist arguments. Remember the lesson for humanity. Choose solidarity. Choose life. Reject evil, actively.
There are two biblical instructions about Amalek - "Remember" and "Don't forget". Jewish sages interpret this as a double commandment involving both mouth and heart. Speak it, give it presence constantly, changing as time passes; remember it as it is, in your heart, a totality.
