Israel Ramps Up Pressure on UN Peacekeeping Force UNIFIL to Leave South Lebanon Israeli Army Radio: In light of recent developments in Lebanon, and the mounting Israeli and American pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah, the Israeli army is expressing concerns that sensitive military information and valuable intelligence may reach Hezbollah through UNIFIL. UNIFIL soldiers have the mandate and authority to access areas where the Israeli army operates along the border, allowing them to film and document the terrain. Senior Israeli officers say they fear that these images, which capture IDF activity, could end up in Hezbollah’s hands and be used for intelligence gathering and operational planning. A senior Israeli military official said: “There is nothing good about UNIFIL, they are essentially an obstructive force. They contribute nothing. The sooner UNIFIL leaves the area and ends its activities, the better.” Beyond these statements, Israel appears to be once again pushing for an accelerated withdrawal of UN peacekeeping forces from southern Lebanon. The pattern is clear: pressure UNIFIL to leave, undermine the role of the Lebanese Army in the south through political and media campaigns, and create a vacuum. In such a scenario, Israel would argue that no legitimate force remains to control the border areas, opening the door for a potential move to impose its own security arrangements or even extend its control into southern Lebanon.
