Haaretz warns of internal collapse as Netanyahu seeks new war to stop “Israel’s destruction”

Haaretz has criticised Israel’s government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, warning that the country is heading towards internal collapse while Netanyahu seeks a new war to stop what the paper calls “Israel’s destruction”.

The newspaper says Israel is moving quickly towards expanding the war in Gaza and Lebanon, while state institutions and governance are breaking down. This, it says, is creating political and security chaos that protects Netanyahu from accountability.

Haaretz reports that Israel seems to be preparing for a large-scale war in Gaza and Lebanon, in a move to block the twenty-point plan proposed by Donald Trump. The paper adds that without strong US pressure, Israel can create “new facts” that prevent progress.

The Israeli army has increased its strikes in Gaza in recent days, killing dozens of people, while also attacking Hezbollah sites in Lebanon. Haaretz describes these actions as a “calculated experiment” to test the limits of current agreements and the ability of international mediators to withstand further escalation.

In Gaza, Palestinian sources warn of an Israeli “push westwards”, aiming to create a new situation that could allow Israel to claim agreements are no longer valid and justify a return to war over “provocations” by the other side.

The editorial says attacks in Lebanon are presented in Israel as an “inevitable” response, creating the atmosphere that a larger confrontation in the north is drawing closer.

Haaretz also says the shock of 7 October, which still affects Israeli society, has become a political tool in Netanyahu’s hands. After returning all surviving captives and most of the bodies of the dead, he now has freedom “to raise or lower the flames as he wishes,” according to the editors.

The paper argues that, as elections near, Netanyahu is trying to present himself as “Mr Security”, capable of striking Israel’s enemies without restraint, while ignoring his role in one of the country’s biggest security failures.

Haaretz concludes: “Instead of being ashamed of the tragedy, he is using it to justify further escalation.”
