New research from the Max Planck Institute estimates more than 100,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 2023 — far higher than the Health Ministry’s confirmed count of 67,173 (as of early October). Using demographic modeling, household surveys and death reports from social media, scientists say the ministry likely undercounts by 35–41 percent, especially women, older people and those buried under rubble. Their mid-range estimate: 112,069 Palestinians killed in the first two years of war. About 27 percent were children.
