How Israel and the West Weaponized a Lie Called Antisemitism
Who Are the Real Semites?
Today, antisemitism is universally understood as hatred of Jews.
But the word Semitic itself has nothing to do with religion, it refers to ancient peoples and civilizations that originated in the Levant.
The irony is striking: those most often accused of antisemitism, Lebanese, Syrians, Palestinians, and other Levantine peoples, are the true descendants of the ancient Semites, while those who use the accusation politically are not Semitic at all.
The Origin of Semitism
The word Semitic comes from Shem, one of Noahโs sons.
In the late 18th century, European scholars borrowed the term to describe the ancient peoples of the Middle East, including the Arameans, Phoenicians, Canaanites, and others who lived in the Levant.
The archaeological sites and ruins of the ancient Semitic peoples still stand across the Levant.
From the Phoenician ports of Lebanon to the Aramaean cities of Syria and the Canaanite settlements in Palestine and Jordan, these sites bear witness to the rich civilizations that shaped the region thousands of years ago.
They are tangible proof of the enduring Semitic heritage in the Levant.
Who the True Semites Are
The peoples of the Levant, Lebanese, Syrians, Palestinians, and Jordanians, are the heirs of the earliest Semitic civilizations.
These ancient peoples built thriving cities, developed trade networks across the Mediterranean and Mesopotamia, and created rich cultural and religious traditions.
The Phoenicians were famous sailors and merchants, the Aramaeans established kingdoms and centers of learning, the Canaanites cultivated cities and temples that shaped the regionโs spiritual life.
They all spoke Semitic languages, Aramaic, Arabic, Phoenician, and Canaanite dialects, which served as the living threads connecting their societies and cultures for millennia.
Israelis Are Not the True Semites
The majority of Israelis living in occupied Palestine are of European descent, with roots in Austria, Poland, Russia, and other parts of Europe.
They speak Hebrew, a language revived and reconstructed in the 19th century by European Zionists using biblical texts combined with European grammar and pronunciation.
They are therefore not the descendants of the ancient Semites of the Levant, unlike the Palestinians, Lebanese, Syrians, and Jordanians who have lived in the region for millennia.
In this way, the term antisemitism has been politically weaponized, applied to the real Semites critics while obscuring the fact that those now calling themselves Semites in Palestine are mostly European in origin.
The Political Reversal
When Israel was established in 1948, its founders came largely from Europe.
They spoke European languages, not Arabic or Aramaic.
They arrived in a land already inhabited by the direct descendants of the ancient Semites, the Palestinians, and claimed to be returning to their ancestral home.
Since then, the word antisemitism has been politically weaponized.
Today, any criticism of Israel or Jews, and even expressions of sympathy for Palestinians is labeled as antisemitism.
Yet the people being accused are themselves Semitic by every historical and linguistic measure.
It is a complete inversion of meaning: the colonizer from Europe calls the native of the Levant antisemitic for resisting occupation on the very land where Semitism was born.
Reclaiming the Word
To be Semitic is not to belong to a religion, it is to belong to a civilization.
It means to share in the ancient languages, cultures, and lands that stretch across the levant.
The living Semites are not found in Berlin or New York, but in Damascus, Jerusalem, and Beirut, in the Arabic spoken in the streets, in the echoes of Aramaic villages, and in the deep continuity of the Levantine people.
Those who turned antisemitism into a political weapon stripped the term from its roots and used it to silence the very people who embody it.
