Calls are mounting for the UN General Assembly to invoke the “Uniting for Peace” mechanism in response to Israel’s ongoing genocide and apartheid in Gaza.
Former UN rights official Craig Mokhiber warns:
“The UN itself is on trial. Will it act now to save lives and preserve its own legitimacy? Or will it go the way of the League of Nations?”
Mokhiber explains that the Uniting for Peace resolution (377 A) empowers the General Assembly to bypass the Security Council—when vetoes obstruct action—to mandate protective measures such as sanctions, accountability mechanisms, and armed UN peacekeeping forces.
