The growing chorus from Netanyahu’s circle accusing Zamir of “dragging his feet” isn’t idle gossip.

The growing chorus from Netanyahu’s circle accusing Zamir of “dragging his feet” isn’t idle gossip. It’s the opening move in a blame-shifting operation, laying the groundwork to hang the army out to dry when Gaza’s alleyways and ambush zones chew through more brigades than the state can politically absorb. Netanyahu needs an alibi for failure; Zamir is being groomed for the role.
Strip away the euphemisms and “caution” is simply fear of the casualty lists detonating before the cameras, an acknowledgment that this force cannot dictate tempo inside Gaza without paying a price it can’t hide. The ghosts of Shuja’iyya, Khan Younis, and now Al-Zaytoun haunt every order, and both Zamir and Netanyahu know it. One sells a mirage to Washington; the other tries not to send too many body bags to Sderot in one week. Neither can admit that the battlefield, not the war cabinet, is setting the pace.
