Israel hasn’t even subdued Khan Younis. Occupying the entire Strip means tens of thousands of ground troops trapped in layered ambush zones, mines, IEDs, and tunnel chokepoints, on Hamas’s terrain. Manpower is already stretched. An occupation would demand open-ended deployments with no exit horizon. Morale and compliance among reservists, especially seculars and centrists, would crater. Even Western sponsors are struggling to justify current ops. An outright occupation reverts the narrative to “military colonization,” likely triggering sanctions talk from Europe and collapse in regional normalization efforts. Iran and Hezbollah have not escalated past controlled attrition. An Israeli occupation of Gaza may be the trigger that flips that switch. This is less a strategic doctrine than a political suicide vest. And the phrasing, “if the Chief of Staff doesn’t like our decision, he can leave”, signals internal rupture. When politicians start talking like coup-proofing strongmen, it means they know something’s breaking inside.
