“Willing to talk, but must respect each other’s core interests.” 🔻 “Opposes turning trade into a political weapon.” 🔻 “China’s development is not to be contained.” In short: You wanted a deal? Show respect first.

Yesterday: Trump whined that “I like President Xi but he’s very tough, very hard to deal with.”
Today: Trump posts a long thread claiming a “very good” 90-minute call with Xi.
Too late. The Chinese side already released the readout today. Beijing set the tone.
1/
Trump says the call ended in a “very positive conclusion.”
Yet oddly, he lists no agreement, no deliverables, no breakthroughs just vague references to a future meeting.
That’s not victory. That’s a face-saving retreat.
2/
Trump names a new team to meet the Chinese side soon.
Why the rush?
Because Beijing didn’t yield to pressure - they held the line, even as Trump ranted about rare earths and China’s dominance.
3/
This is what happens when your trade war turns into a begging tour.
Trump talks about “complexities of rare earth products”?
No, sir. The complexity is that China owns the entire upstream and now it’s no longer playing nice.
4/
Notice what China’s readout said:
“Willing to talk, but must respect each other’s core interests.”
“Opposes turning trade into a political weapon.”
“China’s development is not to be contained.”
In short: You wanted a deal? Show respect first.
5/
This is not 2018 anymore.
Back then, Trump could boast about making China blink.
But this time, Xi let Trump speak first - then ignored him, and released a measured, sovereign statement the day before.
Who’s setting the pace now?
6/
Trump tried to sell this as “two great nations coming together.”
But we all saw what happened:
He dialed Beijing.
Beijing published first.
And all he got was a polite “sure, let’s talk.”
That’s not diplomacy.
That’s China letting him save face.
