Israeli Troops Fire on French UNIFIL Peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon
Israeli officials criticize Lebanese president, currently in Paris on official visit
March 30, 2025 at 11:47 am ET
Israeli troops opened fire on a UNIFIL peacekeeper patrol in southern Lebanon near Rmeish on Saturday. The patrol was already scheduled, so Israel was informed that UNIFIL peacekeepers would be in the area at the time, suggesting this was not a case of mistaken identity.
A separate incident of Israeli troops confronting UNIFIL peacekeepers inside Lebanon was also reported, with the Israelis pointing laser sights at the UNIFIL personnel but not actually opening fire on them this time. No injuries were reported in either incident, and some but not all media reports are terming the gunfire “warning shots.”
Adding to the controversy here, the UNIFIL peacekeepers were reportedly French. During the patrol they were inspecting one of the dirt mounds Israeli troops had set up near Rmeish during the invasion and occupation. Israel has been discovered hiding spying devices around those Lebanese villages in the past, so this was likely what they were investigating.

Israel shooting at UN personnel during a ceasefire is problematic enough, but France is one of the guarantors of that ceasefire, so attacking their troops is likely an even bigger deal. This is especially true since Israel attacked the Lebanese capital city of Beirut over the weekend, and French President Emmanuel Macron criticized that attack, giving this the appearance of potential payback.
Macron termed the attack an “unacceptable ceasefire violation.” This is noteworthy because well over 1,000 Israeli violations have been documented, many involving airstrikes, and this is the first time one of nations meant to oversee the ceasefire has spoken up about it. Macron said he intends to bring the matter up with President Trump, as the US is the other overseer of the ceasefire, though there is as yet no indication that this has happened or that the US is saying anything about the bombings.
During the Lebanon invasion, Israeli forces attacked UNIFIL personnel and destroyed UNIFIL facilities multiple times. Macron was critical of this as well, even though they weren’t specifically French peacekeepers in those cases.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun visited Paris over the weekend as well, taking up the matter of constant Israeli attacks with French officials. Israel has complained about Aoun’s visit, accusing him of attempting to influence the ceasefire’s implementation.

Gabbard Calls Trump ‘President of Peace’ Despite Yemen Bombing Campaign, Support for Gaza Slaughter
Gabbard supports the new bombing campaign in Yemen despite her previous opposition to intervention in the country
March 30, 2025 at 12:37 pm ET
On Saturday, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard called President Trump the “president of peace” despite his bombing campaign in Yemen and his support for the mass slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza.
“President Trump IS the President of Peace. He is ending bloodshed across the world and will deliver lasting peace in the Middle East,” Gabbard wrote on X. “Where Joe Biden failed, President Trump will succeed.”
Gabbard made the comments in a post sharing a quote from President Trump, who claimed his administration was “engaged in relentless diplomacy to forge a lasting peace in the Middle East, building on the historic Abraham Accords.”
Gabbard has been supportive of Trump’s daily bombing campaign in Yemen and was one of the administration officials in the leaked Signal chat that celebrated the bombing of a residential building.
As a member of Congress, Gabbard opposed the first Trump administration’s intervention in Yemen and frequently labeled the Saudi war against the Houthis that the US was supporting at the time “genocidal.”
One reason Gabbard was critical of the US’s involvement in the Saudi war in Yemen was that it was not authorized by Congress, making it illegal under the Constitution. Trump’s current bombing campaign in Yemen has also not been authorized by Congress, a fact recently pointed out by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA).
“Trump promised to end endless wars—now he’s bombing Yemen without Congressional approval. I stood up when Biden did it, and I’ll stand up now,” Khanna wrote on X.
Khanna and Gabbard were among the members of Congress who worked to pass a War Powers Resolution to end US involvement in Yemen in 2019, an effort that was defeated by a veto from President Trump.

Trump Threatens Iran With ‘Bombing’ If Nuclear Deal Is Not Reached
The threat comes after US intelligence agencies reaffirmed that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon
March 30, 2025 at 12:07 pm ET
President Trump on Sunday threatened to bomb Iran if a deal isn’t reached on the country’s civilian nuclear program.
“If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing. It will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before,” Trump told NBC News in a phone interview.
The president has made similar threats toward Iran, but Sunday’s marked the most explicit one yet, and it comes as the US is sending more bombers to the region and pounding Yemen with daily airstrikes. Trump also said the US could hit Iran with “secondary tariffs” if a deal isn’t reached.
Trump’s threat comes after US intelligence agencies said in their annual threat assessment that there’s no evidence Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon or that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reversed his 2003 fatwah that banned the production of weapons of mass destruction.
Iran recently responded to a letter Trump sent to Khamenei proposing nuclear talks and giving Tehran a two-month deadline to reach a deal. A US official told Axios that the deployment of US B-2 bombers to Diego Garcia was “not disconnected” from that deadline.
Iranian officials have repeatedly rejected the idea of direct talks with the US in the face of Trump’s so-called “maximum pressure campaign” but have left the door open to indirect negotiations.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Sunday that Iran’s response to Trump’s letter made indirect talks possible but that the US’s behavior would determine how things would move forward.
“While Iran’s response rules out the possibility of direct talks between the two sides, it states that the path for indirect negotiations remains open,” Pezeshkian said. Iranian officials have been noting the fact that Trump was the one who tore up the 2015 nuclear deal by reimposing sanctions on Iran.
“As we have stated before, Iran has never closed the channels of indirect communication. In its response, Iran reaffirmed that it has never shied away from engaging in negotiations, but rather, it has just been the United States’ repeated violations of agreements and commitments that have created problems on this path,” Pezeshkian said.
“It’s the behavior of the Americans that will determine whether the negotiations can move forward,” the Iranian leader added. In his interview with NBC, Trump said that US and Iranian officials were talking but didn’t elaborate further.

NYT report confirms Pentagon’s ‘open secret’ role in Ukrainian ops – expert
It has long been evident that the US military served as the “the eyes, ears, and brain” behind any significant actions by Kiev, Sergey Poletaev told RT

The recent New York Times investigation into America’s “hidden role” in the Ukraine conflict has confirmed that the Pentagon played a key role in most of Kiev’s significant military operations against Russia, information analyst Sergey Poletaev has told RT.
In a lengthy report published on Saturday, the US paper claimed that the administration of former US President Joe Biden provided Ukraine with support that went far beyond arms shipments. The cooperation involved intelligence sharing, strategic planning and daily coordination at a US military facility in Wiesbaden, Germany, where American and Ukrainian officers set targeting priorities, which they euphemistically called “points of interest” so as to avoid sounding overly provocative.
According to Poletaev, the report did not offer any groundbreaking revelations.
“It has long been clear that the Americans sought to fight Russia with the hands of Ukraine and that the main contribution they make is intelligence and supply of some kind of strike systems, for which they, in turn, provide intelligence,” he told RT on Sunday.
“It was no secret that the eyes and ears and brain behind any serious Ukrainian actions were the Pentagon. Here you go, all this has just been confirmed,” the analyst said.
The investigation, however, “is useful” since it “shows the train of thought of the American side.” At some point, Poletaev said, the US realized they couldn’t fully control Ukraine’s actions.
“They understood that the puppet they had on their hand was not entirely controllable. The puppet behaved as it saw fit,” he explained. The analyst emphasized that this dynamic is crucial for understanding the conflict’s progression and is indicative of situations “when the tail begins to wag the dog.”
Poletaev described the Ukraine conflict as a classic proxy war, reminiscent of those during the Cold War era. In that respect, he noted that it’s interesting that the NYT described it as “a rematch” for US-Russia proxy wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Syria.
According to the analyst, the findings are unlikely to have any impact on the talks between Moscow and Washington on settling the conflict.
The NYT investigation was based on over 300 interviews with current and former policymakers, Pentagon officials, intelligence officers, and military personnel in Ukraine, the US, Britain, and other European countries. It details the cooperation between Washington and Kiev from the early days of the conflict through late 2024.
