Author and journalist Peter Beinart appeared at UMass-Amherst on Nov. 19, 2024, to discuss Israel's ongoing annihilation of Gaza, his evolving relationship with Zionism, and his belief that the only future for Israel-Palestine is one that guarantees equal rights for everyone. Beinart, an orthodox Jew who was once a staunch Zionist defender of Israel and a prominent center-left supporter of the Iraq war, has emerged over the past few years as a fierce critic of U.S. militarism, a stalwart defender of Palestinian rights, and one of most outspoken mainstream critics of Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land and its ongoing mass slaughter in Gaza.
Beinart is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, Editor-at-Large for Jewish Currents, a political commentator for MSNBC and CNN, and Professor of Journalism and Political Science at CUNY. He is also the author of several books, including the bestselling The Crisis of Zionism (2012) and the forthcoming Being Jewish after the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning.
At the event, which was organized by UMass Professor Emeritus Sut Jhally, Beinart was interviewed by Michel Moushabeck, a writer, editor, and publisher of Palestinian Arab descent. The event was sponsored by the Media Education Foundation, Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, Resistance Studies, Faculty for Justice in Palestine, and Interlink Books.
