He says: "[in Judaism] ... human beings are created in the image of God & so nothing should be elevated above human beings who are considered to have of infinite value. What Zionism has done, what the state of Israel has done, it has led many people in the organized American Jewish Community to elevate this state above the absolute value of the human beings who live within this state... ...more than half of whom are Palestinian ... who are also created in the image of God ....that is an act of idolatry because Heschel said that there's only one thing that's created in the image of God ...the human being and to act as if anything else is sacred or sacrosanct is to turn it into an idol and to be practicing idolatry ... ....and so you see this phrase again & again & again "does Israel have a right to exist?" ...the Israeli philosopher Yeshayahu Leibowitz said, absolutely not. no state has a right to exist. Human beings have rights. States are just instruments for the protection of human life and human flourishing and human dignity and their legitimacy is entirely based on how good a job they do in protecting the rights and dignity of life of the people."
