Australia is going to pay an increasingly heavy price for its belief in US propaganda - the claim that Washington acts selflessly and benevolently, believes in democracy, peace and international law, and is an “overall force for good in the world.”
None of these mantras, no matter how disingenuously, naively or repetitively chanted by US cheerleaders in Australia, are true.
As Trump 2.0 arrives the folly of the alliance and the true horrors of US interventionary violence across the world will become obvious to even the most fawning, indoctrinated and obsequious friends of Washington in Australia.
Given policy elites and “thought influencers” still heavily rely on mainstream media for their management of public opinion, it is hardly surprising they want to restrict access to social media and censor the sources which bypass the Establishment’s traditional ideological gatekeepers.
Partnering with Islamic extremists and other terrorists in Syria, propping up repressive satraps in the Middle East, placing Israel above the law and other forms of legal accountability for its crimes while threatening ICC judges, are only Washington’s most obvious and contemporary belligerencies.
Enabling the genocide in Gaza, provoking China into a conflict over Taiwan, expanding the US military presence in the South China Sea, fighting Russia via proxies in Ukraine, and raising the prospect of a nuclear conflict are others.
Come the January inauguration, the US lobby in Australia will have its work cut out explaining how all of this squares with our “common Western values.”
For the bombed, displaced, cleansed and bulldozed in the Global South - those who by definition have little wealth and power to project around the world - this is what “the West” has always meant. Imperialism, exploitation and colonial occupation are not new but they can always be intensified and are now being re- legitimised.
Is it any wonder that les exclus are resisting and revolting?
