"The superior races have a right, because they have a duty. They have the duty to civilize the inferior races."

Jules Ferry, who led France twice in the 1880s and was one of the architects of modern French colonialism, said this in parliament:
"The superior races have a right, because they have a duty. They have the duty to civilize the inferior races."
This was not a fringe position.
This was the mainstream intellectual and political foundation of French empire.
The "superior races."
The "duty to civilize."
Now those same political traditions, not identical, but continuous, look at the descendants of the people Ferry’s republic colonized and see a threat to "French civilization."
The civilization that designated their grandparents as inferior and in need of correction is now claiming to be threatened by the corrected.
This is not irony.
This is the logical endpoint of an ideology that was never honest about what it was doing.
