They called it the American Dream deliberately.
Not the American Plan.
Not the American System.
Not the American Reality.
The Dream.
A dream is something that happens to individuals while they're asleep.
It requires no collective action.
It cannot be organized.
It cannot be demanded.
It asks only that you believe, personally, that your individual effort will produce your individual reward, and that if the reward doesn't come, the failure is yours and yours alone.
The Dream is the most effective anti-union, anti-solidarity, anti-class-consciousness messaging in the history of political communication.
It converts structural conditions into personal moral narratives.
It makes poverty a character flaw and wealth a virtue.
It makes the person who asks why is the system built this way feel like they're making excuses.
And it does all of this while calling itself inspiration.
That's craft. That's genuinely sophisticated political engineering.
And it has worked, across generations, on people it was actively working against.
