The news does not inform you about power. It informs you on behalf of power.

The news does not inform you about power. It informs you on behalf of power. This is not always a conspiracy. It does not require a meeting where editors decide to deceive. It requires only that the people who own the platforms have interests, and that those interests shape, over time, what is covered and how, what is framed as a crisis and what is framed as normal, whose deaths become stories and whose deaths become statistics. The machinery is structural. It doesn't need to be coordinated to be consistent. A thousand journalists making individually reasonable professional decisions, inside institutions owned by people with consistent interests, produces coverage that serves those interests with remarkable reliability. Stopping swallowing the news doesn't mean becoming uninformed. It means asking, for every piece of information: who produced this, who benefits from my believing it, and what would I have to look at directly if this story weren't here to look at instead? That question, applied consistently, is a form of power. One they cannot take from you.
