Palestinian-American historian Rashid Khalidi rejects the claim that “Israel” is “the only democracy in the Middle East,” pointing to decades of military occupation over Palestinians, military courts and sweeping restrictions on movement and daily life. “How can it be a democracy,” he asks, “when almost 50% of the population have no rights whatsoever?”
