AIPAC and its super PAC spent $104.3 million in this election cycle, so apparently that is what controlling congress costs.
Yesterday the House paid back their benefactors using your rights as currency.
The House passed a bill that strips all federal aid from any university that boycotts Israel, and here's what that actually means. You can organize a boycott against Ford. Against Bud Light. Against Target. Against any American company, against any American state, against any other country on this earth, or even against the United States itself, and the First Amendment protects your right to do so. The Supreme Court in NAACP v. Claiborne Hardware said so unanimously in 1982.
But if you try that against Israel while touching one dollar of federal money (your tax money), Congress just voted to take that dollar back.
No other country gets this. Not Russia. Not Saudi Arabia. Not China. One country in the world has a federal law built specifically to punish American institutions for boycotting it. That's what $104 million buys.
The Constitution doesn't have a carve-out for foreign policy lobbies, but our Congress just wrote one anyway.
I would ask: “whose interests is that bill actually protecting?” but that is pretty obvious. Instead I’ll ask, how long do we keep letting other countries buy our politicians and allow our rights to be subordinated?
