In 1948, the State of Israel secretly hired the former Nazi SS official, Walther Rauff, responsible for the murder of at least 100,000 Jews, as a Zionist spy during the 1948 Palestine War. Israeli intelligence agents hired Rauff sometime after he escaped from allied captivity in 1947. Rauff reached Syria, where he served as military adviser to President Hosni Zaim until Rauff was arrested on the day of the coup against Zaim. Rauff managed to evade punishment and was released and ordered to leave the country, where he wound up in Italy. This is when he seems to have been recruited by Israeli spies, who put him to work for an entire month writing a report on Syria's military deployment. Then Israeli spies tried to send him on a covert mission to Egypt, likely to assist with the attempted assassination of key Egyptian leaders. But the plan was not executed as the mission had been compromised. Israel then compensated Rauff, facilitated his travel documents, and helped him escape to South America. Recall that Rauff was appointed head of the SS Technical Department and was responsible for the project of extermination using gas vans. After Jews and others were herded into the back of a gas van, the vehicle was sealed and the exhaust pipe introduced into the back. When the engine was turned on, the fumes killed everyone in the back of the vehicle. Between 97,000 and 200,000 people, most of them Jews, were murdered in this way.
