Just as Netanyahu’s inherited the racist worldview of his father Benzion, an aide to Jabotinsky, Israel’s Chief Rabbi David Yosef inherited his rabid bigotry from his dad.
His father, former Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, compared Arabs to snakes and to ants “swarming” through Jerusalem; said that “it is forbidden to be merciful” and called for missiles to “annihilate them”; declared that “Goyim were born only to serve us”; prayed that Palestinians would perish and be struck by a plague; and, after Hurricane Katrina, referred to Black Americans as kushim (derogatory Hebrew term for Black people, equivalent to the N-word), while asking God to “bring a tsunami and drown them.”
A vast literature has focused, and rightly so, on the need to “deradicalize” Islamist extremists.
Yet Western public debate has devoted far less sustained attention to the religious supremacism, rabid racism and dehumanization that have become mainstream in Israeli society.
That blind spot matters. Dehumanizing language is not merely ugly rhetoric. When it becomes normalized by the highest religious authorities, leading politicians and media figures, it helps make the unthinkable thinkable and collective punishment, forced displacement and massive civilian suffering acceptable…
