Kushner Says US Will Not “Restrict Israel’s Right to Defend Itself” — And Threatens U.S. Support for Israel to “Finish the Job” in Gaza

U.S. envoy Jared Kushner issued Hamas a 60-to-90-day ultimatum to surrender its weapons, threatening expanded U.S. support for further Israeli military action if it refuses. Speaking to Fox News after meeting Netanyahu, Kushner claimed “progress could come quite soon.”

➤ “If Hamas actually gives over the weapons in the tunnels willingly over the next 60 to 90 days, that obviously would be the elimination of a huge security threat for Israel, almost an unthinkable achievement,” Kushner said.

➤ “If they don’t follow through now with their commitment, everyone will see that they’re not genuine about peace, and that Israel will have a lot more support from the US and others to go and finish the job in the appropriate way.”

➤ Kushner said Hamas officials “said all the right things” during Sunday’s meeting, but added: “It’s very, very hard to trust, you know, a terrorist organization that committed these terrible atrocities.”

“We had a very cordial meeting,” he said. “And so we’re going to give them a chance to perform, but it’s going to have to be based on actions and steps.”

➤ Kushner called his nearly four-hour meeting with Netanyahu “very, very good,” saying they addressed “some valid concerns.”

➤“We were able to go through some of the misunderstandings and misinformation,” Kushner said, including questions concerning “Israel’s right to defend itself” and “Gaza’s reconstruction.” He said Israel would not “restrict” Israel’s right to “defend itself”— same pretext Israel has invoked to murder 1265 Palestinians since signing a ceasefire last October.

➤ “We could be seeing progress … in as little as 30 days, hopefully on starting to take some of the weapons out and hopefully, you know, filling in some of the tunnels as well. Next 60, 90 days as well,” he said.

Kushner announced no corresponding deadline for Israel to end its attacks, withdraw its forces from the 70% of Gaza, or allow the minimum ceasefire-mandated levels of food and medicine into Gaza.
