🇨🇳China built a payment rail, a gold window, and a global vault network so it never has to fight the dollar at all... Peter Alexander opened with the two questions everyone conflates. Does Beijing want to replace the dollar? No. Is it building an alternative system? Absolutely, and it started in 2012, the day Washington first cut Iran from SWIFT and Beijing realized the same switch could someday flip on Chinese banks. The architecture is elegant. A payment network outside New York's correspondent banks. A gold window open since 2014, sovereign-level only, where a trade surplus in renminbi settles in physical bullion. And the masterstroke, a network of vaults in Hong Kong, soon Switzerland, Dubai, and Riyadh, so Saudi gold ships home to Saudi soil. Beijing's answer to "why trust you?" is simply: don't. Which means the renminbi never needs to dethrone anything. The dollar keeps the transactions. Gold takes the savings. And Iran's wartime lifeline already runs on these rails. Peter's sharpest observation was about restraint. Beijing could force renminbi invoicing on every exporter tomorrow and chooses not to. Even rare earths, he says, are China not yet playing hardball. On Taiwan, with no U.S. carrier in the Pacific: "China just needs to wait."
