A BBC headline asking "Are Iran the unluckiest side in World Cup history?" triggered outrage on social media, with users arguing that labelling the systematic sabotage of an entire national delegation as "bad luck" is a gross distortion of reality.

Throughout the 2026 World Cup, Iran’s participation was hampered by severe restrictions imposed by the US, one of the co-hosts.

Due to visa denials, the team was refused a permanent base on US soil, with Mexico ultimately offering them a sanctuary in Tijuana. Players were permitted into the US only hours before each of their three matches and forced to depart immediately after the final whistle, a schedule that severely affected their ability to recover and prepare. These obstacles were compounded by visa denials for a large portion of their technical, medical and administrative staff, leaving the squad without essential support infrastructure. 

The evidence shows that Iran was not the victim of a chaotic draw or a bad refereeing decision; they were the victims of a host nation that weaponised its borders to dismantle their competitive integrity.
