Why Iran trusts Trump less than ever
Iran has imposed a new rule of engagement on Israel in defence of Lebanon.
First, Beirut’s southern suburb cannot be bombed without consequences. If Israel strikes it, the Israeli-occupied north will be hit in return.
Second, the ceasefire in Lebanon now appears tied to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran is still keeping surprises in reserve, fully aware that netanyahu, an ICC fugitive for war crimes, will try again. Yet the ceasefire in Lebanon proves that Trump does have leverage over Israel. The question, then, is why he did not use it when the memorandum of understanding began.
This is precisely why Iran does not trust Trump. He gave Netanyahu the time he needed to occupy several strategic positions before Monday’s meeting in Washington with a Lebanese delegation already under pressure to surrender politically.
