Australian mining billionaire Gina Rinehart, one of the country's wealthiest and most influential oligarchs has sparked outrage after proposing that Australia offer free land near Townsville to Israelis, their families and defence companies so they can relocate and manufacture military technology in northern Queensland.
Speaking at a Townsville event, Rinehart suggested providing land, transport and support for Israelis to move to Australia and develop products including advanced war drones and "Israeli style domes" for export.
The comments drew criticism from those who suggested she was trying to create another Israel.
Others argued she was promoting closer ties with Israel's military-industrial sector at a time when Israel conducts a genocide in Gaza.
Critics accused Rinehart of attempting to transform part of Australia into a hub for Israeli military technology and questioned why Australian land and resources should be used to support foreign defence interests.
