The harsh truth is, Iran has leverage over us, and besides the self-destructive path of restarting the war, Trump can do nothing

Daniel Davis Deep Dive
These two headlines, almost more than anything else, exposes why there is no negotiated end insight to the Iran, deal, no matter what President Trump claims. According to the New York Times on Saturday, Trump, in a fit of anger, hardened the terms on which American would be willing to make a deal – seemingly oblivious to the reality that Iran merely laughs at his anger, and does not budge. This morning, Iran is saying there is zero trust between the United States and Iran, owing to our previous violations of negotiations (going to war under the cover of diplomacy), and says they will not agree to a negotiated deal unless they FIRST get frozen funds released, see the withdrawal of the US blockade, and see that sanctions have been waived on their energy sector. Beyond that, they’re not willing to do anything, and are basically daring Trump to do something about it. And that either means Trump will return to the worst possible course of action and restart the war – to our incredible harm – or he will continue to do nothing, which is also antithetical to our interest. The harsh truth is, Iran has leverage over us, and besides the self-destructive path of restarting the war, Trump can do nothing besides a) walking away, declaring victory (even if one doesn’t really exist), or b) submit to Iran’s conditions. No American president has been in this position in our lifetimes: because of our unwise decision to the past, we are in a position of weakness and cannot force our way out of it; we have to concede to someone else…
