 Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has rejected the U.S.-backed “Trilateral Framework,” calling the Israel-Lebanon agreement a set of “diktats” and “ten times worse” than the widely unpopular May 17 Agreement of 1983, which sought to normalize relations with Israel but was never implemented and was later annulled, according to Al-Akhbar.

Berri told the outlet “the most dangerous aspect” is not only the framework’s political content, but its potential to “incite internal divisions and draw Lebanese into confrontation among themselves.”

He argued the deal reverses Lebanon’s priorities by making Israeli withdrawal dependent on a long list of political and security conditions, without guarantees Israel would meet its own obligations.

”This agreement will not pass, and it will not be implemented,” Berri said, adding that opposition should remain constitutional, political, and national.

On reports that Army Commander Gen. Rudolf Haykal could be dismissed, Berri warned: “No one should even joke about such a move, and no one should play games with the Army,” calling it a “red line.”
